Field Training Officer (FTO)--The Field Training Officer Program is designed to prepare new probationary officers (or ROOKIES) to be Rowlett Police Officers. The FTO program is comprised of five parts- a two week orientation phase, 3 five week training phases and a two week checkout (or ghost) phase. Each newly hired officer is placed with a different FTO for each of the four phases. Each new officer is evaluated daily on his/her performance and is evaluated at the end of each phase to determine whether or not they should be allowed to proceed to the next phase. During the first stages of training, the FTO will take the lead showing the recruit what is expected and how it is expected to be done.
As the phases progress, the FTO's allow the recruits to take on more and more responsiblity. Finally, during the checkout phase, the FTO's only function is to evaluate and observe the recruit without taking part. The only time an FTO would take an active part during the ghost ride phase would be to assist the recruit in a violent situation or emergency. Each officer who is selected as an FTO is sent to specialized training where they learn how to evaluate and constructively instruct their recruits.
Lt. Marvin Gibbs is the Commander responsible for the FTO program. He can be reached at (972) 412-6246 and (972) 412-6250 respectively.
