Planning and Zoning Commission

The Planning & Zoning Commission is a decision-making commission, which conducts public hearings and grants final approval on some issues. They are responsible for the following:
-Processing & initiating zoning cases at the request of property owners and/or their representatives with respect to individual zoning cases;
-Initiation of zoning cases at the request or approval of the City Council;
-Hearing, recommending, and/or determining any matter relating to planning or subdivision control as may be specified by the subdivision ordinance or other applicable law; and
-Performing other such duties as may from time to time be assigned by the City Council.
The Commission consists of 7 members, appointed to 2-year, staggered terms. Members of the Commission are subject to the City's Ethics Ordinance. City staff liaison is the Director of Planning. Two alternates are also appointed by the Council for a two year term to serve in the place of a voting member due to the absence or disqualification of a voting member. An alternate member, when serving in the place of a voting member, shall enjoy the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities in their role as a voting member.
Planning and Zoning Commission meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month, 7 pm, in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 4000 Main Street. Work sessions are often held prior to the Commission meetings at 6 pm in the City Council conference room of City Hall. Both meetings are open to the public.
