Local School Districts

  • Garland
    The Garland Independent School District (GISD) web site is divided into eight sections, district, departments, schools, human resources, instruction, general info, news, and links. For quick access to information about what is going on in the GISD select the general info link. Select the schools link to find the web site for a particular school or to find faculty and staff e-mail addresses.
  • Rockwall
    From the directory on the left side of the home page of the Rockwall Independent School District web site, select information for general information about the school district or select schools for contact information for faculty and staff or more specific information pertaining to an individual school.

Home Schooling

  • Home Education Magazine
    The online component of Home Education Magazine offers a selection of articles and columns from both past and current issues. Also available from this site are discussion boards, a free newsletter, links to support groups and a resource guide.
  • Homefires - The Journal of Homeschooling
    At Homefires.com find free articles and fee-based reports on home schooling, curriculum implementation, and parenting skills, suggestions for curriculum modules, field trip, and activities, and advice on teaching. Homefires also includes an e-store, which sells books, videos, audios, and packages oriented toward homeschoolers.
  • Homeschool Central
    Homeschool Central provides a guide to new homeschoolers, collections of resources and organizations listed by state, product reviews, and links to message boards, study resources, and additional sites devoted to homeschooling.
  • Homeschool World
    This is the official site of Practical Homeschooling magazine and the Big Book of Home learning. Homeschool World offers online articles, expert advice, forums, event listings, and a catalog with books and education games.
  • National Home Education Network
    The National Home Education Network (NHEN) seeks to encourage the work of state and local homeschooling organizations and individuals by providing information, fostering networking and promoting public relations on a national level. The NHEN web site offers e-mail lists, discussion forums, op-ed web pages, event listings, support contacts, newsletters, and public relations support for homeschoolers.

  • Peterson's College and University Information
    Petersons.com provides a variety of information regarding college and career training. The four main components of this site allow users to search for colleges my location, major, and tuition, search for accredited graduate programs, find test preparation guides for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, ASVAB and more, or search for scholarships and financial aid.
  • SuperCollege.com College Search
    Supercollege.com offers tools and resources for finding and paying for college. Search for college profiles at this site or find tips and strategies for choosing a college, the application process, and obtaining scholarships.
  • U.S. College Search
    U.S. College Search provides school name, address, phone, website, degree program offering, degree type and student information for over 9,000 4-year universities, 2-year colleges, junior colleges, vocational schools, job training programs, and technical certification programs.  Users can search by location, institution type, and school names.  Access is also provided for online degree programs, financial aid, and occupation guides.

Locating Colleges and Degree Programs

  • Campus Tours (Virtual College Tours)
    With information for over 800 colleges and universities across the nation, Campus Tours provides easy access to college web sites, images, maps and virtual tours which often include video, audio, and animation. Search for schools by state or alphabetically.
  • National Center for Education Statistics
    The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing education related data.
    • College Locator
      The NCES college locator allows users to search for colleges and universities with the following criteria: geographic region, state, maximum distance from zip code, type of institution, instruction programs available, institution name, number of students, and title IV participation.
    • College Search
      The NCES college search allows users to search by state or region and provides the following information for 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities: contact information, average full-time tuition, total enrollment, degrees and programs offered, diversity of student body, library Information, U.S. Dept. of Education campus crime/security statistics, and a link to the U.S. Dept. of Education Student Financial Aid Homepage.
  • Overview.com (Colleges and Vocational Schools)
    Overview.com provides contact information, scholarship information, loan sources, and financial aid advice for over 6000 vocation schools, colleges, and universities. Search for schools by career field and then narrow choices by a more specific career, location, enrollment, length of program, tuition, and accreditation. Links are provided for schools with web pages.
  • Peterson's College and University Information
    Peterson’s offers three search options for locating colleges and universities. The keyword search option matches keywords and phrases to university descriptions, the name search option searches by college or university name, and the detailed search option allows users to select preferences for location, tuition, sports, and more. More specific searches are available for nursing, culinary, information technology and visual and performing arts schools.
  • SuperCollege.com (College Search)
    The SuperCollege.com has a college profile search and a college matchmaker. The profiles can be searched alphabetically and by state and provide an overview, as well as information about students, admissions, costs and financial aid. The college matchmaker allows users to search for a school by region, state, institution type (public or private, 2-year or 4-year), major, and enrollment size.
  • Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
    The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1965 to "provide leadership and coordination for the Texas higher education system to achieve excellence for the college education of Texas students."

      The degree program inventory contains information on degree and certificate programs offered by Texas public institutions of higher education.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • FastWeb
    FastWeb is a free online scholarship matching service with a database of over 600,000 scholarships. To search the site, students must first create a profile. FastWeb also notifies students when new scholarships are added and application deadlines are approaching.
  • FAFSA on the Web - Federal Student Aid
    The Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA) is provided by the U.S. Department of Education. This web site walks students through the preliminary process of filing for student financial aid. The first section explains what documents the student will need for the application and how to determine eligibility. The second section allows student to apply online, while the final section allows student to check the status of their application.
  • FindAid
    FindAid is a comprehensive annotated collection of information about student financial aid on the web. Topics covered include: scholarships, loans, prepaid tuition plans, military aid, grants, financial aid applications, and cost calculators.
  • College & Student Savings Calculator
    The College Savings Calculator helps develop savings plans for education.

Entrance Exams

  • ACT (American College Testing Assessment)
    The ACT web site provides information about test registration and preparation, scores and score analysis, as well as test preparation materials. Additional sections for parents, students, educators, and adult learners are also included.
  • CLEP (College-Level Examination Program)
    CLEP allows students to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. This web site provides information about the CLEP program, test registration and preparation, scores, and the exams.
  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test)
    From the MBA.com GMAT web site users can register to take the GMAT exam, learn more about the test and test scores, read test day tips, and download free test prep software and materials.
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
    The GRE web site for test-takers includes general information about the structure, purpose, content, and scoring of the GRE, test registration options, information for test-takers with disabilities, and test preparation materials.
  • LSAT (Law School Admission Test)
    Use the LSAT web site provided by the Law School Admission Council to register for the LSAT exam, learn more about the exam, find/change test locations, check file status, download a sample exam, or buy test prep materials.
  • MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
    The MCAT web site offers users registration and contact information, practice tests, score release options, MCAT research data and a downloadable student manual. The Student Manual is comprised of an introduction and five sections that describe the content, types of questions asked and test preparation involved in taking the MCAT.
  • SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)
    The SAT web site, made available by collegeboard.com, allows users to register online for the SAT, view and send SAT scores, and find information such as exam dates and fees for the SAT I, SAT II: Subject Tests, PSAT/NMSQT, AP, and CLEP. The SAT Prep Center portion of the site includes free practice questions and mini-SAT, as well as fee based prep materials.
  • THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment)
    Use the THEA web site to find general test information, online registration, test dates, a free full-length test, official study guide order form, and a manual for educators outlining the test content and how to use scores.

Applications

  • The Common Application Online
    The Common Application is the recommended form for admission to the undergraduate programs of 241 colleges and universities (listed on this site). The Common Application Online can be used to complete the forms and submit them electronically or in hardcopy. This site has sections with additional information designated for students, teachers, and universities.
  • Texas Common Application
    Through the Texas Common Application web site students can apply for graduate and undergraduate admission to any Texas public university (and some community and private colleges), copy submitted application for another institution, submit application essays on-line, apply for scholarships from participating universities and search for general and university-specific information.
