Career Selection

  • Job Profiles
    This web site seeks to provide users with the personal side of careers. Persons currently working in each field complete the job profiles. Profiles are divided into categories and include the following: rewards of the job, stressful parts of the job, basic skills required, challenges of the future, and advice on entering the field.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    Created and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Occupational Outlook Handbook is a nationally recognized tool for helping people make decisions about future careers. Cluster links are available for browsing multiple occupations, and an A-Z index provides quick access to specific occupations and a listing of all occupations.
  • O*NET Occupational Information Network
    O*NET Online is a useful resource for job seekers, students, and human resource professionals. The O*NET database includes information on skills, abilities, knowledge, work activities, and interests associated with over 950 occupations. This information can be used for career exploration, vocational counseling, and a variety of human resources functions, such as developing job orders and position descriptions and aligning training with current workplace needs.
  • The Riley Guide
    This site offers a directory of employment and career information sources and services available on the Internet. Through the Riley Guide, job seekers will find links to information about resumes and cover letters, researching employers, job listings, networking, and salary guides.

Job Searching

  • CareerBuilder
    CareerBuilder.com is one of the leading recruitment resources in the nation. This site provides three types of services to job seekers. Search and Apply allows users to search job adds by job type, industry, and company, or browse by field of interest. My Career Builder offers additional options, such as posting resumes, creating personal search agents, and resume assistance. The third service, Advice and Resources, provides expert career advice, a salary calculator, and a newsletter.
  • CareerJournal.com (Wall Street Journal)
    Career Journal.com offers a database of employment opportunities, updated twice weekly, which can be searched for company name, industry, job function, and location. Positions featured include senior and general management, sales, marketing, finance, and technology, among others. Also presented are news articles, features, and trends relevant to job seekers.
  • DFW Employment
    DFW Employment includes services for both job seekers and employers. Job seekers can use this site to post resumes, view current job openings by category, apply to job postings, and create search agents. Employers can use this site to post jobs, search resumes, and create their own search agents.
  • HotJobs.com
    A Yahoo! Company, Hot Jobs, offers users a quick job search (search by keyword, industry, and location), an advanced search (search by keyword, location, job category, salary, experience, and source), a company search, and an international job search. Other site options include creating lists of previous job searches and job postings, posting a resume, and career tools. A separate home page is available for recruiters.
  • JobBankUSA
    JobBank USA provides employment and resume information services to job candidates, employers and recruitment firms. Offerings for job candidates include: a job search; resume and cover letter tips, samples, and submission; work at home jobs; career counseling; and related links. Choices for recruiters include: corporate directories; sample job ads; e-mail list services; and healthcare services.
  • Monster.com
    At Monster.com users can search jobs, post resumes, receive job postings through e-mail and get career advice. Jobs can be searched by keyword, location, and category. The career advice section includes tips on resumes, interviewing, salaries, networking, workplace issues, relocation, and a listing of more than 120 job profiles.
  • Texas Rehabilitation Commission
    Services offered through the Texas Rehabilitation Commission web site include assisting Texans with disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep employment, as well as preparing students with disabilities to plan for the move from school to work. Other rehabilitation resources, such as a vocational guide, disability determination services, independent living services and centers, and a technology lab, are also available.
  • Texas Workforce Commission
    The Texas Workforce Commission oversees and provides workforce development services for Texans. This web site provides access to career development information, job search resources, and training programs for job seekers, as well as information on labor law and labor market statistics, recruiting, retention, and outplacement services for employers.

    An extensive resume building resource, CollegeGrad.com: Best College Resumes offers a detailed twenty-step process for creating a resume, including a helpful checklist. Links to other employment related sections are listed along the left edge of the screen.
  • JobWeb
    A guide to resume writing and interviews, JobWeb provides pertinent information about the job application process. Access this site to find sample resumes, tips for resume writing, and action words. Also available are tips for preparing for an interview and handling interview questions.
  • Rebecca Smith's eResumes & Resources
    Unlike the other sites in this section, Rebecca Smith’s eResumes & Resources, focuses on creating an electronic resume. With tutorials, articles, and links, teaches user the basics of searching for job and networking online.
