    Use AllReaders.com to search for books and reviews by genre or characteristics. Select from the categories of Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Mystery/Thriller, Literature, Romance, Biography, and History. The detailed search option allows for searching my plot, main character, main adversary, setting, structural options, and theme.
  • Bartleby.com
    At Bartlby.com find full-text materials in reference, verse, fiction, and non-fiction. Search the texts of Shakespeare, the King James Bible, Gray’s Anatomy, the Columbia Encyclopedia, and Bartlett’s familiar quotations among others.
  • Best Book Buys
    Best Book Buys allows users to browse bookstores, bestsellers, hot deals, top books by topic, book clubs, and book buy back programs. Use the title, author, keyword, or ISBN search to find the lowest price among a dozen online retailers for new and used books.

    Visit BlackLiterature.com com to find information about African American authors, book excerpts, a calendar of events, and links to author web pages.

    Bookreporter.com provides a place for readers and writers to discuss books. This site offers book reviews, features, author profiles, author interviews, excerpts, reading group guides, literary games and contests.
  • BookWire
    Through Bookwire access Bowker products such as Booksinprint.com, which provides detailed book descriptions and publisher information, and Ulrichsweb.com, which provides descriptions and publisher information for periodicals. Bookwire also offers author interviews and biographies, publisher homepages, and monthly-recommended book lists.
  • Overbooked
    Together with links to author web pages, annotated book lists, featured book lists, book reviews, reader advisory resources, and a discussion board, Overbooked also offers genre pages, with genre focused reading lists, publisher information, new books, and related links.
  • Project Gutenberg
    Project Gutenberg is the Internet’s oldest provider of free electronic books. Supported by volunteers, Project Gutenberg currently offers access to more than 6,000 books and texts. Materials can be searched from the home page by author or title, more specific criteria is available in an advanced search.

Book Clubs

  • BookMuse.com
    BookMuse.com provides readers and reading groups with ideas for book discussions. Materials are included for all age groups (kindergarten through adults) on a variety of subjects. Some portions of the site require a fee-based subscription to access.
  • Online Book Club (Chapter-A-Day)
    Visit this site to sign up for a free online book club and discover a wide array of new books. The club delivers 2-3 chapters of a book in daily five-minute selections via e-mail. Book topics include both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Oprah's Book Club
    The Oprah Book Club web site offers an alphabetical and a chronological list of the book club titles, books discussed on the Oprah show, books from O (the Oprah Magazine), a list of Oprah’s favorite books, and a reading list for children. For each book club title, this site includes information about the book and the author, reader reactions, discussion highlights from the Oprah show, discussion questions, and an online discussion board.

  • New York Review of Books
    The New York Review of Books is a national literary magazine available both in print and electronically. Articles in the magazine focus on books and current issues. Unfortunately only portions of the site are accessible without a subscription.
  • Reader's Robot
    With reviews indexed for close to 5,000 books in 21 genres, Reader’s Robot offers a great deal of content and several options for accessing it. The site can be browsed by most recent reviews, browsed by genre, searched by keyword, or searched by various book appeals, such as length, plot type, and writing style.
  • Salon.com
    Visit the Books section of Salon.com to find book reviews, book related news and features, and letters from readers. Complete access to the site requires a fee-based subscription but free day passes are available.

  • Internet Public Library
    • Online Literary Criticism Collection
      The Internet Public Library Literary Criticism Collection provides access to critical and biographical web sites about authors and their works. These sites can be browsed by author, title, nationality and literary period.
  • Novel Guide
    Novel Guide provides literary analysis for classic and contemporary literature. The novels available are listed in alphabetical order by author or by title. Each novel includes a summary, character profiles, metaphor analysis, theme analysis, top ten quotes, and an author biography.

Online Book Stores

  • Abebooks.com
    Use Abebooks.com to buy or sell used, rare, or out-of-print books. Search for books by author, title, and keyword or browse the subjects listed on the left side of the home page.
  • Alibris
    At Alibris.com search for books, music, and movies by title, author/artist, or subject/genre, or browse the collections by subject. Alibris provides access to over 35 million used, new, and hard to find titles. If a title is not listed, users can take advantage of the Book Fetch program, which will send out a notification when the requested title has been added to the inventory.
  • AllBooks4Less.com
    Allbooks4less.com is the online division of the Book Depot, one of the largest closeout/remainder bookstores in North America. The site offers fiction and non-fiction materials for adult and children at bargain prices, though it is not likely to have bestsellers and recent publications.
  • Amazon.com
    One of the largest online book retailers, Amazon.com sells new, used, and electronic books. Search for books by categories, such as bargain books or bestsellers, by subjects, such as cooking and travel, or by keywords. When available, Amazon.com provides book descriptions, excerpts, customers’ reviews, editorials reviews, and similar titles for each item.
  • Barnes and Noble
    Another of the large book retailer, Barnes and Noble online also offers new, used and electronic books. Books can be searched by keyword or browsed by subjects, or the following categories: what’s new, bestsellers, coming soon, recommended, and book clubs. For each title, Barnes and Noble provides the book description, critic’s reviews, customer reviews, summaries, reading guides, and list of similar titles.
  • BookFinder.com
    BookFinder.com allows user to view the collections of over 50,000 sellers of new, used, rare, and out-of-print books. Search for books by author, title, type and features. English language and non-English language materials are included in the index.
  • BookSense.com
    BookSense.com provides online access to independent booksellers. Before searching customers enter in a zip code to access the nearest bookseller. From this website information about local authors, store events, and staff recommendations can be accessed. Books can be searched for keyword, title, author, and ISBN, or browsed for subject.
  • BooksAMillion.com
    Visit BookAMillion.com to purchase new books, magazines, textbooks, out-of-print materials, and audio books. The special features of this site include, spotlight books, reviews, a personal shopper service, special services to businesses, publishing, and a variety of book lists.
  • Buy.com Books
    Search for new books at Buy.com by subject category, title, author, ISBN, or publisher. From the homepage find featured products, top sellers by category, top sellers of the day, author features, and specialty stores.
  • Half.com by eBay
    Half.com offers a fixed-price, online marketplace to buy and sell books, CDs, movies, video games, computers, consumer electronics, sporting goods, and trading cards. Item search results are listed according to item condition (brand new, like new, acceptable), with item description, reviews, and price comparisons to other web sites.

  • Academy of American Poets
    Designed to be one of the most comprehensive poetry web sites on the Internet, the Academy of American Poets allows users to search for poems and poet biographies, listen to selected poems, participate in discussion forums, access information about National Poetry Month, find exhibits, and locate poets by state.
  • Poetry Society of America
    The Poetry Society of America (PSA) web site provides information about PSA membership, awards, calendar, administration and funding. Also provided is a resource collection of over 200 poetry-related web sites.

    This site is divided into four sections. The ClueLass Home Page includes news, general site information, and feedback.     An entertaining site devoted to mysteries, MysteryNet.com offers original online mysteries (daily and monthly), see-and-solve mini-mysteries (weekly), book lists, discussion lists, and mysteries for kids. Also available are link to mystery and book resources and book clubs.
  • Sisters in Crime
    Sisters in Crime is an international organization interested in promoting the work of women mystery writers. This site includes information about membership, upcoming events, and how to contact local chapters as well as a searchable catalogue of their books in print and an alphabetical list of mystery links.
  • The Thrilling Detective
    The Thrilling Detective is an online magazine devoted to crime and detective fiction. Each month new cover stories and topics are presented together with regular sections including an alphabetical list of private eyes and tough guys, mystery links, new books, and reviews.

    The Hugo Award, also know as the Science Fiction Achievement Award, is sponsored by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). This site provides listings of Hugo award winners by year and by category and links to other award web sites.
